This is very pretty, but seeing it and thinking about Matisse’s version of the same motif, for me, reveals the virtue in Matisse’s messy, crudely drawn painting of his wife (that one hopes was not too much a commentary on the marriage …). Something natural comes through Matisse’s slopped on paint in comparison with which this seems prettified and homogenized. Is that unfair to Metzinger? Differences in style only? Or differences in quality?
