One of the reasons why thieves are effortlessly able to steal expensive art pieces is because they are far more cunning than the average individual and since they have very little to lose, and more to gain, they will employ nearly every trick in the book to get what they want. However, that does not mean that you can be equally cunning and outfox them. Here are some simple tips to keep in mind.
Extremely poor security should not be present
Extremely poor security is probably the most common reason why your expensive piece of art could end up missing in the first place. If you can afford to show off your expensive collection at an exhibition, then you should not skimp out on paying for extra security personnel to keep a close watch on your expensive possessions while your eyes and ears are focused on something else, such as entertaining the guests.
However, you should also be aware that the combination of human instincts and technology is a very powerful one indeed, which we will explain later. Professional thieves will pose as experienced buyers belonging to opulent families in search of expensive and fine pieces of art that will make them the center of attention amongst their elite circle.
However, what they are really trying to do is to scout the area and assess the threat level, which would obviously be the level of security present and the level of guests present that would impede their getaway progress if they manage to successfully pull off the theft or if they have to escape the premises in order to avoid getting caught.
On this occasion, relying solely on security personnel is not going to be sufficient because it is extremely simple for professional thieves to distract the guards, and let the remainder of the crew do their bidding. Always remember that if a theft is going to take place at your exhibition, then there isn’t going to be a ‘one man show’ for obvious reasons. A group will definitely be involved since they are able to employ their own dedicated expertise according to the situation at hand and make off with an expensive array of art pieces.
Having said this, it is a very good idea if you decide to invest in monitoring equipment and place two highly vigilant individuals behind the screens to monitor for any suspicious activity.
Try to keep a dummy rather than the original at the exhibition
This will always work in your favor if you decide to place a dummy or the original art piece in order to save you from a ton of headaches. If a buyer is interested in purchasing the expensive article from you, then a private meeting can be held in which they offer their terms and a negotiation session commences. This helps to lure thieves in a predicament where they would be forced to leave because their effort has now been deemed futile in attempting to steal a dummy.
However, before proceeding with this step, you should first make sure that the person you have hired to make a copy of the original artwork is highly proficient at his/her work. If the dummy has been produced skillfully, then even highly dexterous thieves will not be able to tell the difference.
Do you want to prevent thieves from making their merry way with an expensive collection of art pieces? If not, then we are confident that you will follow these steps accurately and to the letter.
